I Try My Best to Recycle

I became conscientious about my environmental impact at a young age. The idea of knowing my everyday actions here on the ground could affect what happens to our environment, the atmosphere, greenhouse gasses and such; intrigued me. Since then, I would do a lot of research and would relay all the new information and ways to live eco-friendly lives to my family. A really common change to make was recycling. I'm not exactly sure when, but the Borough of Greenwich passed a law giving each home an extra trash can for recyclables only. Recycling became a lot easier and I took charge of collecting the recyclables in my house and disposing of them.

After I integrated recycling into my family, I got involved in a volunteer group that started cleaning sidewalks of trash and lakes and ponds. I really liked doing this, because not only was I cleaning up trash, it was also improving the habitats of animals such as squirrels and birds or ducks in the water, who could get trapped when looking for food or moving around. From there, I started other efforts to better my impact on the environment.

  1. Recycling is so important! It makes me mad that Uni's recycling program isn't respected by students. We have seperate bins for paper and plastics, but people just put their garbage wherever. Students also forget to rinse recyclables before throwing them in the bin, which isn't helpful at all. You should teach an agora class or something about how to recycle better :)

  2. so glad to hear that you're enjoying yourself while also doing good for the environment! I think that we don't fully realize the effect that we have on the rest of the world. even just one person can create so many positive changes in the world!

  3. Emphasis on recycling has plagued me forever. Whether reliving 2nd grade in Raleigh, 4th grade in Ankeny, or 7th grade in St. Charles, the notion of recycling has been one of the few constants in my life. It's been so apparent I sometimes convert "An apple a day keep the doctor away" to "recycle away or regret it everyday" in hopes that the negative connotation will help me eventually subconsciously recycle in the future. It's great to hear you have your own positive experiences with recycling and go beyond what you're asked to in order to fulfill it. Maybe someday you'll inspire someone else to follow in your footsteps too?
